Michael Romanowski

Coast Mastering
Michael Romanowski is a Grammy-nominated mastering engineer and owner/chief engineer of Coast Mastering, based in Berkeley, California. He works in a purposefully built 9.1.6 immersive mastering facility, designed with Bob Hodas and Bob Levy. It was awarded a TEC Nomination for studio design in 2020.

Michael is a leader in the field of immersive audio, having built his first surround studio in 2000, with Paul Stubblebine at Coast Recorders Studio on Mission Street in San Francisco.

As a trusted advisor and consultant to companies such as Dolby, Sony, Fraunhofer, and Apple, Michael collaborates in the process to develop software, design production techniques, and best practices.
An expert in the art and science of mastering, Michael has contributed to the field by writing articles for publications including Mix Magazine, Electronic Musician, and Tape Op. He has participated as both a moderator and panelist at industry conferences such as AES, NAMM, SXSW, Tape Op, Potluck Con, AES Mexico, and AES Europe).

Since 2006, Michael has been an elected leader with The Recording Academy. He currently serves as a Trustee of the San Francisco Chapter and is co-chair of the National Awards and Nominations Committee, and Producers & Engineers Advisory Council. He is a former chair of the National Presidents Council and former co-chair of the Planning and Governance Committee.

He is also the owner and co-founder of the analog tape label, The Tape Project created in 2006, with partners Paul Stubblebine and Dan Schmalle. This tape-only label releases recordings on 1/4” 15ips two-track tapes duplicated real-time from the original analog masters.

Michael’s extensive credits for mastering in immersive audio include work for Alicia Keys, Fantastic Negrito, The Eagles, Old Dominion, Mr. Big, Media Hyperium Surround (Sting, Cheryl Crow, Marvin Gaye, Tears for Fears, Soundgarden, Pink, Evanescence, Seal, Yes, Lady Gaga, Alanis Morisette, Matchbox 20, and James Blunt).
